Tonsillitis is an inflammatory condition of the tonsils, which are two oval-shaped masses of tissue located at the back of the throat, one on each side. The tonsils are part of the lymphatic system and play a role in the body's immune response, helping to fight off infections. Tonsillitis occurs when the tonsils become infected or inflamed.
The most common causes of tonsillitis are viruses, such as the rhinovirus (which causes the common cold), influenza virus, and the Epstein-Barr virus (which can lead to infectious mononucleosis). Bacterial infections, particularly streptococcal bacteria (Group A Streptococcus), can also lead to tonsillitis, a condition commonly referred to as "strep throat."
The symptoms of tonsillitis can vary but often include:
- Sore throat
- Difficulty swallowing
- Swollen and tender lymph nodes in the neck
- Red and swollen tonsils with white or yellow patches
- Fever
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Bad breath
- Voice changes
- Stiff neck (particularly in severe cases)
Tonsillitis can be acute (short-term) or chronic (recurring or persistent). Acute tonsillitis is usually caused by viral infections and tends to resolve on its own. Bacterial tonsillitis, such as strep throat, is typically treated with antibiotics to prevent complications.
Chronic tonsillitis may involve frequent or persistent sore throats and may require further evaluation by a healthcare professional. In some cases, recurrent or severe tonsillitis may be an indication for a tonsillectomy, which is the surgical removal of the tonsils.
It's essential to seek medical attention if you suspect you have tonsillitis, particularly if the symptoms are severe, do not improve with home care, or if there is a suspicion of bacterial infection (strep throat). Left untreated, certain bacterial infections can lead to complications, such as rheumatic fever or kidney inflammation. Your healthcare provider can diagnose the condition and recommend appropriate treatment based on the cause and severity of the tonsillitis.
